Spring is a bittersweet time for faculty, staff and administrators at American colleges and universities. It is a time when we celebrate the academic accomplishments of our students and wish them well as they begin their professional careers. It is also a time when we say good-bye to colleagues with whom we have worked throughout the years. As of this writing, three EKUBusiness individuals will officially retire or change positions.

Dr. Daniel Thorne, associate professor of accounting, will retire after 21 years of dedicated service. He was primarily responsible for teaching advanced accounting and accounting theory. A recipient of the Jack L. Dyer Excellence in Teaching Award, his expertise will be very difficult to replace.
Mrs. Kathy Moats, director of the EKU Small Business Development Center for the past nine years, will also retire. She was instrumental in assisting hundreds, if not thousands, of aspiring entrepreneurs in EKU’s service region develop their initial business plans and applications for small business loans. She also taught entrepreneurship and small business courses to EKUBusiness students.
Dr. Norb Elbert, chair of the MMAC department, will return to full-time teaching this coming fall. Dr. Elbert has provided excellent leadership during his seven years as department chair and was instrumental in proposing the PGA/PGM™ program. He also oversaw the international business program and EKUBusiness’ international student exchange agreements.

Many thanks to Dr. Thorne, Mrs. Moats and Dr. Elbert for many years of dedicated service to EKU, the College of Business and Technology and EKUBusiness. We wish each of them well as they begin new chapters in their lives!

EKUBusiness Co-op Successes

How do you spell success? For the Cooperative Education program in EKUBusiness, there are several ways.

First and foremost, our students excel in their workplace assignments. Last December, Rachel Montgomery, (May ‘07, accounting) was selected as the co-op student of the year by the Kentucky Association of Cooperative Education and Career Employment (KACECE). She was chosen at the fall conference from nominees throughout the state. Rachel’s employer was Lectrodryer of Richmond. This past spring, Joshua Sims, (marketing, Waynesburg) a July graduate, was selected as the outstanding applied learning student for the 2006-07 school year. Josh worked for three semesters with Big Ass Fans Company, a manufacturer of industrial fans in Lexington. EKUBusiness students shine in comparison to students from throughout the region.

Co-op is fast becoming the program of choice for bringing new talent into many organizations. This past spring, 70 percent of the employers judged the performance of EKUBusiness students as outstanding and 96 percent reported that they would consider hiring their student if an opportunity arose. In fact, more than one-third did employ them full time.

Cooperative education is also playing a role in the development of the business curriculum. Last fall, the student and employer evaluation instruments were revised to gather additional information for program assessment. We are now collecting employer feedback on nine important areas including: communication, creative thinking, technology and teamwork. The data is forwarded to academic departments and program coordinators and provides an external perspective as we assess student learning and curriculum development. Co-op coordinator Jim Fisher said, “Cooperative education is playing a vital role in the transition of students from the classroom to the workplace and in the evaluation and modernization of the business curriculum. It is more than just a job and a paycheck.”

For further information, contact Jim Fisher at 859-622-1091 or the EKU co-op office at 859-622-1296.

MBA Offers CPA Continuing Education

The EKU MBA program is providing an excellent opportunity for CPAs to satisfy their yearly continuing professional educational requirements. In Summer II session, Ed Fenton, professor of accounting, is teaching Research in Tax through a combination of in-class and online learning. Summer II classes begin June 26.

The MBA program will be offering accounting professional educational opportunities every semester. For more information, visit the MBA website at www.mba.eku.edu or call 859-622-1775.

Chief Justice Speaks at EKU Law Day

Kentucky Supreme Court Chief Justice Joseph Lambert spoke to a packed auditorium in the Business and Technology Center for the first Law Day event hosted by the Insurance Studies program. Morgan Chairholder Burke Christensen arranged Justice Lambert’s visit “so that EKUBusiness students could have the chance to listen to someone who, by virtue of his position as the Chief Justice, has a tremendous impact on their lives.”

Justice Lambert addressed students by giving them an overview of the Kentucky court system and encouraged them to ask questions. He also said that judges must not let their personal or political feelings enter into decisions because the law must be predictable in order to be successful in bringing order to society.

EKU president Joanne Glasser introduced Justice Lambert as a role model for students considering careers in public service or law. Law Day was established in the late 1950s to draw attention to both the principles and practice of law and justice.

PGM Swings Into Action

Just one year ago, EKU became the home of the 18th PGA/Professional Golf Management™ program in the nation accredited by PGA of America. At that time, only eight students had committed to the program. Now, as the first academic year ends, 22 PGA/PGM™ students are enrolled. And for 2007-08, another 32 students have been accepted with 10 more still deciding.

Current students are from Canada, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio and Kentucky. They have completed two PGM classes, participated in weekly PGM tournament program events, the PGM Student Association, a PGA Playing Ability Test and the Player Development program. Bill Coomer (Director, Tournament Operations, Kentucky Section PGA) provided a Rules and Tournament Operations seminar. Students also volunteered for Gibson Bay’s Golf Equipment Demo Day in April and for the Golf for Business and Life program. Summer cooperative education experiences take students across the country from North Plains, Ore., to Pocono, Pa.

With no other PGA/PGM™ programs in the surrounding states, recruiting is going very well. According to program director, Kim Kincer, “This has been an exciting year for the PGA/PGM™ program. Providing a comprehensive business education to prepare students to enter the golf industry as PGA members continues to be the mission of the program.”

For more information on the new PGM program, contact Kim Kincer at 859-622-4976 or visit www.pgm.eku.edu.

Richard Fern, EKU professor of accounting, is the first recipient of the Bea Sanders/American Institute of Certified Public Accountants Innovation in Teaching Award. Fern was selected for the honor for his practice of presenting accounting cases on CDs, “A More User-Friendly and Interesting Delivery Tool.” The Kentucky Society of CPAs recognized Fern as the award recipient at its annual spring awards dinner on April 27 in Louisville.

EKU accounting students also led the way by capturing 10 of 28 KYCPA grants and scholarships awarded at the event. The KYCPA awards, totaling more than $40,000 this year, are based on academic achievement and commitment to the accounting profession. Alan Long, managing partner at Baldwin & Associates PLLC and current secretary/treasurer and president-elect of KYCPA as well as one of the trustees, said that EKU’s large number of recipients indicated that “EKU is preparing its students very well for an accounting career.”

The junior with the highest GPA who is a member of Beta Gamma Sigma is also awarded a $500 scholarship. This spring’s scholarship recipient was accounting student Tabitha Wilson.

Dyer Excellence in Teaching Award

EKUBusiness is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2007 Jack L. Dyer Excellence in Teaching Awards -- Dr. Chang-Yang Lin, Department of Accounting, Finance and Information Systems, and Dr. Teresa McGlone, Department of Management, Marketing and Administrative Communication.

“I’m gratified to be a recipient of the Jack Dyer Excellence in Teaching Award for 2007. This award is very special to me since it is based on input from both students and colleagues. The award’s namesake represented the honor and traditions of the ‘old school’ during his tenure at EKU, which makes receiving this award even sweeter,” McGlone said.

According to Lin, “I feel privileged to be in the company of the Jack Dyer Excellence in Teaching award recipients. This award drives me to do an even better job with my teaching.”

Created by Dyer in 2003, this award recognizes EKUBusiness faculty members for excellence in classroom instruction. The awards will be presented by Dyer at a formal luncheon in August.
