The College of Business & Technology is pleased to announce that Ms. Theresa Klisz has been selected as the Distinguished Speaker for Fall 2007. She will visit the EKU campus on Thursday, October 18, 2007, to speak with College faculty, staff and students.

We are honored to have Theresa Klisz, an Eastern alumna, as this year’s Distinguished Speaker. As Washington Editor for Gannett News Service in Washington, D.C., Ms. Klisz brings with her a broad-based knowledge across many sectors of society, business and government. She has a detailed understanding of the news media and its operations, as well as its evolution to leverage emerging technologies. Ms. Klisz is a member of the Gannett News Service management team. Gannett is a national news service providing daily news and feature material to 85 Gannett Co., Inc.-owned daily U.S. newspapers and 23 television stations.

Ms. Klisz will speak on her experiences at a Public Address in the Business and Technology Center Auditorium from 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. She will also be available to discuss current events and issues at a Faculty Breakfast Roundtable from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. in the Faculty Lounge of the Keen Johnson Building.

Following the public address, Ms. Klisz will join EKU Administration officials and the Richmond business community for a luncheon at the Arlington House.

EKU alumna Theresa Klisz is the Washington Editor for Gannett News Service in Washington, D.C. In this capacity, she directs coverage of Congress for newspapers, web sites and television stations in 10 states.

As a 1978 graduate of the EKU journalism program, Ms. Klisz is a former news editor of the Eastern Progress. She began her professional career at The Lexington Herald, now known as the Herald-Leader, during her junior year at Eastern. Prior to joining Gannett, Ms. Klisz worked at The Courier-Journal as an editor for a prototype online service.

Ms. Klisz joined Gannett as Assistant News Editor in research and development producing prototypes of games, almanacs and calendars. Her tenure at Gannett involves participation in special event coverage that includes the September 11 terrorist attacks, the 2004 and 2005 hurricanes, the loss of the shuttle Columbia, and five presidential elections and inaugurations. Ms. Klisz has also led Gannett’s high-profile coverage of the Olympic Games in Torino, Athens and Salt Lake City. She has reported on the Kennedy Center Honors and the Miss American pageant.

In her current position as Washington Editor, Ms. Klisz sets the direction of Washington-based coverage for regional newspapers and manages coverage by the reporting team. She works with editors at newspapers with circulations ranging from 6,000 to over 300,000 to ensure that reader needs are met and also develops online approaches to broaden the impact of coverage and reach new audience groups. She is a member of the Gannett News Service management team and coordinator of the Gannett-wide hurricane response team.

Ms. Klisz shared in the Best of Gannett Awards in 2005 for coverage of Hurricane Katrina and in 2006 for a Special Report on School Safety. She is also a recipient of the Paul Miller Fellowship from the National Press Foundation.
