  Message from the Dean

Dean Bob Rogow

Much has been said of the global economy during the past few years. Indeed, we are increasingly engaged in international commerce. Many of the goods we once manufactured are being produced in other countries and imported to the United States, while our country continues to be a leader in new and innovative ideas, products and services.

This past fall, after several years of encouragement from the College of Business and Technology and the International Studies Office, Eastern Kentucky University signed an agreement to participate in the Magellan Exchange Project. The Magellan Exchange currently provides excellent opportunities for students to study abroad for one semester at several European universities and at a Mexican university. In future years, the Magellan Exchange will include universities in Australia, New Zealand and Asia. The participating universities are particularly interested in American exchange students from programs represented in the CB&T, especially in the areas of business, communication and technology.

As more students enrolled in the CB&T decide to participate in the Magellan Exchange and other available study abroad opportunities offered through the college, financial assistance to help support these excellent students is becoming a greater challenge for them, their families and the college. If you are interested in assisting worthy students in the college obtain a one or two semester study abroad experience, please contact us in the Dean’s Office.

COMM & MBA Offer Unique Option

The College of Business and Technology, with its various departments and majors, provides a fertile ground for inter-disciplinary studies. A combination of the skills found in the Department of Communication in conjunction with the Department of Management, Marketing and Administrative Communication highlights how innovative and progressive faculty working together can net an exciting option in the EKU MBA program. The Integrated Communications Option offers a unique blend of public relations, marketing and corporate communication designed to enhance individual contributions to a business organization.

Dr. Judy Spain, director of EKU’s MBA program said, “This option taps the unmet need of students in the area of journalism, marketing, public relations and communications to provide the credentials necessary to function in the business world. Previously, students with these majors might pursue a master’s in their already chosen field. But, with this option, the EKU MBA graduate has both the knowledge of his/her own discipline, coupled with the business perspective, and topped off with the ability to look at issues from a public relations, marketing and corporate communication view.”

Building upon the EKU MBA curriculum, this nine-hour option will deliver integrated skill sets, resulting in potential job opportunities for graduates in the fields of crisis communication, investor relations, public relations, communications specialists, marketing, alumni affairs and similar job functions. The EKU MBA program is the only one in the nation to develop and implement this option. Good communication skills are the number one quality an employer seeks in a new hire. With this option, EKU MBA graduates will have those skills and be able to quickly adapt lessons learned in the classroom into their workplace.

According to Dr. Renee Everett, chair of the Department of Communication, “This ‘marriage’ of marketing and public relations is truly a unique concept in the world of business and one we are fully in support of. It provides a wonderful collaboration between departments in the College of Business and Technology - one we hope to expand on.”

More information on the EKU MBA program may be found at mba.eku.edu.
