Fox Places Second in International Writing Contest

Congratulations to EKUBusiness student Kalyn Fox for placing second in the Association for Business Communication (ABC) international writing contest. ABC is an international organization committed to fostering excellence in business communication scholarship, research, education, and practice. Undergraduate students enter the writing contest by responding to a case developed by an ABC member. The 2009 contest contained 17 entries from Florida, Texas, Ohio, Kentucky, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Mississippi, Minnesota, and the United Arab Emirates. The ABC Student Awards Committee chose seven finalists and a panel of academic readers selected the top three entries.

Fox is a management major from Murray, Kentucky. She is a Patterson Scholar, Phi Kappa Phi, Regents Scholar and Mortar Board member. When asked about her recent award, Fox said, "This shows that we do have a top business program at EKU, and we are a top contender amongst the other 'big name' schools out there." As a student athlete, Kalyn has won numerous awards including the OVC Academic Medal of Honor, OVC Commissioner’s Honor Role, College Sports Information Director’s Association All-Academic Second Team, Colonel Scholar, and Presidential Scholar. Kalyn is a team leader both on and off the softball field. She works with children to teach them the sport of softball in clinics and camps. She also serves in leadership roles for EKU student professional organizations and has been named the 2009 Distinguished Senior for the College of Business and Technology.

Her faculty sponsor Dr. Marcel Robles said that "Kalyn demonstrates sincere commitment to learning, leading, and serving. She epitomizes the academic performance and business professionalism that we strive for with our students."

Dean of the College Dr. Robert Rogow was especially pleased to hear that Kalyn had brought home an international award and said, "Kalyn Fox was recognized last spring as a Distinguished Senior in the College of Business and Technology. Her selection by the international ABC Student Writing Contest as a second place winner affirms her academic achievements at EKU. We are proud of her accomplishments and the way she represents Eastern and the College of Business and Technology as well as her department."

Fox, who will receive a $200 cash award, competed against schools like West Chester University in Pennsylvania and the University of Miami. She plans to attend the national ABC conference in November in Portsmouth, Virginia, to receive her award. The membership of the ABC, like the field of business communication, is richly interdisciplinary, drawing members from such fields as management, marketing, English, speech communication, and information systems, to name only a few. The membership also encompasses communication consultants and other business practitioners. ABC has a strong membership base in North America, Europe, Asia, and the Pacific.
